Winter Tires in Sweden and Norway

What Changes in the 2025/2026 Season

Although the two Scandinavian countries share a similar climate, their rules differ, and are very important for international hauliers operating across the region during a winter.

Starting in November 2025, new winter tire regulations will come into force in Sweden.

From 10 November to 10 April, all trucks and buses driving on Swedish roads including foreign-registered vehicles  will be required to use winter tires, regardless of current weather conditions.

This marks a major shift from the previous system, under which winter tires were mandatory only in winter conditions between 1 December and 31 March.

The government has abandoned its earlier plan to require the use of snow chains, but has extended the validity of the new winter tire season from November 10 to April 10.

In summary, transport companies will need to plan tire changes earlier in the year, and there will be no obligation to carry or use snow chains in Sweden

In Norway, regulations emphasize traction and actual grip.

Truck drivers are personally responsible for ensuring that their vehicles have sufficient grip on the road, even if the tires meet labeling and tread depth requirements.

Key dates and requirements:
– 15 November – 31 March: winter tires are mandatory for vehicles and trailers with a GVW over 3,500 kg.
– 1 November – the first Sunday after Easter: a minimum tread depth of 5 mm is required for both the vehicle and trailer.
– In Nordland, Troms, and Finnmark, this rule applies earlier – from 16 October to 30 April.

Summary – Sweden vs. Norway

For companies operating between the two countries, keeping track of these differences is crucial to avoid fines and to ensure drivers and cargo safety during the Scandinavian winter season.
