On 25 March 2025, Sweden will implement a new road toll system based on CO₂ emissions.

The revised system will apply to heavy goods vehicles, with fees determined by both Euro class and CO₂ efficiency.

Vehicles will be divided into five CO₂ classes, where lower-emission trucks will benefit from reduced charges.

The tax applies to all trucks over 12 tons on highways and certain main roads and can be paid annually, monthly, weekly, or daily, with reduced rates for vehicles with lower emissions.

By default, trucks meeting Euro 6, Euro 5, Euro 4, and older standards will be classified in CO₂ Class 1.
However, Euro 6 trucks may qualify for a higher (better) CO₂ class depending on their fuel type and efficiency. For example, gas-powered Euro 6 vehicles may be placed in a lower-emission category that is higher CO2 emission class, while zero-emission electric or hydrogen-powered trucks will be classified in CO₂ Class 5, benefiting from the lowest toll rates.

Euro 6 trucks in CO₂ Class 1 will pay around 1,274 euros per year, whereas a zero-emission vehicle in CO₂ Class 5 will pay around 319 euros (original fees are in SEK).

This means that while the default rates for many trucks remain unchanged, operators with more fuel-efficient or alternative-fuel vehicles will benefit from lower tolls. The system is designed to encourage investment in lower-emission vehicles rather than impose a toll increase. Older or less efficient trucks may see similar or slightly higher costs depending on classification.
