From 1 February 2026, Norway will allow higher maximum gross vehicle weights for selected truck and trailer combinations.
The permitted weight increase depends on drivetrain type (fossil, biogas, or zero-emission) and the number of axles.
The main objective behind these changes is to improve transport efficiency, achieve better capacity utilisation, and reduce emissions, while ensuring that roads and bridges have sufficient load-bearing capacity.
The new weight limits apply only to roads that are officially approved for 60 tonnes, according to the current Norwegian road classification list.
On standard 50-tonne roads, the increased weights are not permitted, unless the road is reclassified to Bk10/60
We recommend to use Vegvesen Trafikk to check road classifications and plan compliant routes.

The new rules apply to selected truck-and-trailer combinations with a maximum total length of 19.50 metres
6-axle combinations:
3-axle truck + 3-axle trailer
7-axle combinations:
4-axle truck + 3-axle trailer
3-axle truck + 4-axle trailer
The most important change is that 6- and 7-axle combinations are allowed higher total weights, depending on the vehicle’s drivetrain.
Zero-emission vehicles (electric / hydrogen)
6 axles: up to 56 tonnes
7 axles: up to 56 tonnes
Biogas-powered vehicles
6 axles: up to 55 tonnes
7 axles: up to 56 tonnes
Fossil-fuel vehicles
6 axles: up to 54 tonnes
7 axles: up to 55 tonnes
The government has directly associated the increase in permitted vehicle weight with the introduction of zero-emission and biogas-powered trucks, which often have reduced load capacity because of heavier battery systems or alternative fuel installations.
By approving higher maximum gross weights for such vehicles, policymakers seek to prevent operators transitioning away from diesel from being placed at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to effective payload capacity.
