Updated regulations for dangerous goods will come into effect on January 1, 2025.
Among other things, new UN numbers for dangerous goods and new regulations for the transport of batteries are being introduced.
Dangerous goods regulations are regularly updated to meet changing requirements and safety standards.
New regulations for road transport (ADR), rail transport (RID), and inland navigation (ADN) will come into effect on January 1, 2025, with a transition period running until June 30, 2025, to allow companies time to make necessary adjustments. In some cases, extended transition periods may also be available.
Special attention is given to air transport, as there are generally no transitional periods, meaning that companies transporting dangerous goods by air must immediately implement the regulations as of January 1, 2025.
Key Changes in the 2025 Dangerous Goods Regulations Include:
– Introduction of new UN numbers, the four-digit identification numbers used to identify dangerous goods.
– New regulations for the transport of lithium and sodium batteries. These batteries pose particular risks due to the potential fire hazard, so more detailed requirements for packaging, labelling, and documentation have been established.
– New regulations for the transport of electric vehicles, due to the batteries installed within them.
Norway, as part of the EEA Agreement, has joined international agreements on road (ADR) and rail (RID) transport of dangerous goods, obligating it to comply with these agreements for both international and domestic transport within Norway.
The Norwegian DSB (Direktoratet for samfunnssikkerhet og beredskap – Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning) published “consultations” on changes to ADR and RID regulations as part of the national regulations for the inland transport of dangerous goods.
The changes have already been adopted internationally, so the consultations have more of an informational role.
