Sweden and Norway lift the overtaking ban for heavy vehicles on the E6 over Svinesund.

Swedish authorities have decided to lift the ban of overtaking for heavy vehicles over 3,5 tonnes on the E6 at Svinesund cross border.

The new regulation will come into force on August 26, and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen) will implement the same regulation on the Norwegian side.
The date is probably related to the end of the summer holidays and less passenger car traffic, which will make it easier for everyone to introduce changes in the use of lanes at the border crossing.

Empty lorries without goods to clear at the Customs or Customs Agency are not allowed to drive in the left lane, and thus increase longer than necessary queues, which also increase the risk of accidents.
As queues build up further due to this ban, drivers are forced to break driving and rest time regulations, or they decide to make dangerous lane changes.

The traffic situation with kilometers-long queues on the E6 has been a serious issue, and the Svinesund Committee has worked on it for a long time.
Several years ago the committee initiated the establishment of a collaboration group for the border crossing. The group consists of representatives from the Norwegian Truck Owners Association, the Swedish Association of Road Transport Companies, the Swedish Transport Administration, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, the Swedish Customs (Tullverket), and the Norwegian Customs (Tolletaten).

As the traffic situation has worsened in recent years, the collaboration has implemented several positive changes.
For instance, Swedish Tullverket has reorganized and moved its administrative management closer to the Svinesund cross border.
They have also increased capacity at Svinesund by expanding inspection lanes from six to ten.

And from August 26, lifting the overtaking ban will significantly improve the traffic of trucks crossing the border, separating empty
trucks from the ones, which actually require customs clearance of goods.

We believe it is good information and with addition of Digitoll, crossing the border and customs clearance of goods will be smoother and faster, making our transport industry more effective.
