From 1 January 2025, the current mandatory euro vignette will no longer apply in Denmark. It will be replaced by a kilometre-based motorway toll for trucks, which will depend on the vehicle’s CO2 emissions. 

This is intended to make freight transport more environmentally friendly.

According to the Danish Ministry of Taxation, the kilometre-based motorway toll will initially apply to trucks with a maximum permissible gross weight of 12 tons or more. 

From 2027, trucks weighing 3.5 tons or more will also be subject to the toll. With this reform, Denmark is aligning its toll system with the reformed EU road directive, which incorporates CO2-based differentiation.

The toll road network will be expanded in two stages:

• From 2025, approximately 10,900 kilometres will be subject to tolls.
• By 2028, the network will expand to approximately 75,000 kilometres, including all public roads.

The charging system will depend on the emission class and the weight of the truck.

Emission Classes in the New Danish Charging System:

1. Class 1: Trucks first registered before 1 January 2019 or not belonging to other CO2 emission classes.
2. Class 2: Trucks with emissions 5% below the CO2 reference value.
3. Class 3: Trucks with emissions 8% below the CO2 reference value.
4. Class 4: Trucks with emissions 50% below the CO2 reference value.
5. Class 5: Zero-emission trucks (e.g., electric or hydrogen-powered).

Tables below show how much toll is to pay depending on the emission class and the weight of the lorry.

For allowed gross weight of lorry 12000-17999 kg

The first fee in the table applies outside low-emission zones, while the second amount is a surcharge for driving within a low-emission zone.

For allowed gross weight of lorry 18000-32000 kg

For allowed gross weight of lorry more than 32000 kg
