According to the regulations of the Mobility Package, the new version of tachographs, known as Smart Tachograph 2 (SMT2), must be installed in all newly registered heavy goods vehicles from August 21, 2023.

The intelligent tachograph in version 2 will bring significant changes to the transportation industry. One of the key enhancements is the ability to automatically locate the truck and detect any crossing of national borders. This new version streamlines processes related to cabotage and delegation, making their monitoring more convenient.

Let us recall that from August 21, 2021, the second-generation intelligent tachograph will be mandatory in newly registered vehicles. Moreover, vehicles already registered and engaged in international transport will also be required to equip the latest smart tacho version from January 1, 2025. For vehicles with first-generation intelligent tachographs, upgrading to the newer version will be necessary no later than August 19, 2025.

Therefore it would be sensible for transportation companies to conduct an inventory of their vehicles and develop a financial plan to meet the upcoming EU requirements.
